We’ve been interested to discover what people have searched for related to hovercraft on Google so we’ve decided to answer some of the questions that came up. We will be adding more in the coming weeks.
Why did hovercraft stop?
They didn’t. Today there are hundreds of hovercraft working all over the world - because there are some jobs that only hovercraft can do. You can find hovercraft earning their keep with police, coastguards, military and civil engineering outfits as well as ferries.
Anyone living around the Solent will be aware that there has been a passenger hovercraft service running between Southsea and the Isle of Wight since 1965 that still runs today while new hovercraft continue to be designed and built in Southampton.
Are hovercraft still in use?
Yes and there are many different jobs that hovercraft can do.
Did the hovercraft fail?
No. Having spent a whole career designing, building, operating (and latterly writing about) hovercraft, we would argue that hovercraft are a successful and viable form of transport. They have found their niche now. The hovercraft industry is smaller than it used to be, but it is still there.
